Badges sit very nicely on top of a infrastructure of open educational resources or open course ware. In particular we'll look at one success story in this area P2PU (Peer to Peer University).
Mick speaking: "To start the event off I'll take you through how P2PU are addressing some of the key areas of innovation in e-learning. These include:
- How to create a vibrant community of on-line peer learners
- How to support educators to create and manage on-line courses
- How to bring Badges and peer-assessment into the mix
Part of the success of P2PU has been their rapid development of a software platform to make this all possible. We'll have a hands on demo to earn a badge in P2PU and migrate it over to your Open Badges backpack.
Another part of the success has been to bring together educators from a wide spectrum of environments, from secondary schools to prestige universities with community learning and DIY hackers very much in there as well.
In the second part of this meetup we'll take inspiration from this diversity to imagine how Open Badges could work in Greater Manchester. What might the local badges ecosytem look like for learners and teachers in 2 years time?"
About this Group
Meetup group for people interested and involved in Open Badges. Developed by Mozilla, Open Badges are an infrastructure to provide accreditation of skills.
As the Mozilla Open Badges website puts it:
Learning today happens everywhere. But it's often difficult to get recognition for skills and achievements that happen online or out of school. Mozilla Open Badges helps solve that problem, making it easy for any organization to issue, manage and display digital badges across the web.
Our Manchester group is aimed at taking an overall look at Open Badges and each meeting will include one or all of the following;
- Demonstration workshops where you can earn Badges
- Help creating Open Badges for your project / organisation
- Discussions on the merits and logistics of Badges for community/ institutional accreditation, and overcoming difficulties of online assesment
If you are an educator and interested in seeing if you can 'badgify' one of your lessons or workshops. Get in touch with us and we will help you to do this.
We will also look at some of the existing tools and communities that are working with Open Badges including the P2PU - Peer to Peer University. We will also be working with the MDDA to set up a test Open Badges server infrastructure which we will be testing out.
