14 - 28 August 2024 12:00 - 13:00

About this event

Are you interested in learning how to create more inclusive products, services, and teams?

Over three weeks, our team will host a series of online sessions exploring various aspects of digital inclusion beyond accessibility compliance. We'll delve into lived experiences, uncover how people may be excluded in life and at work, and share practical tips for making meaningful improvements in organisations

Our sessions

Wednesday 14th August: 12:00 – 13:00

Elizabeth Buie (She/Her)

Older Adults: Are We Really Designing for Our Future Selves?

Advice on design for older adults urges us to think of our future selves. This promotes empathy with older users but hints that the design challenges for today’s older people will be the same in 20 or 50 years.

Some issues will remain: body and mind do change with age. Issues begin at different ages and proceed at different rates, though, and design must always consider them. Other issues depend on knowledge. What YOU know when you’re older will differ from what today’s older people know.

This talk will explain the differences and how to handle them.

Wednesday 21st August: 12:00 – 13:00

Tracey Kerr (They/Them)

Tech Beyond the Binary

Being an Ally isn't hard in any industry, sometimes it's as easy as not saying "ladies and gentlemen" or a singular gendered greeting like "guys" or "ladies" to groups of people you assume to be cisgendered. In this talk you're going to find out what it's like for trans and non-binary folks to navigate this cis-heteronormative world in tech, and how we can improve their experiences!

Wednesday 28th August: 12:00 – 13:00

Lisa Matthews PhD (She/Her)

Accessible design, neurodivergent designer

As a neurodivergent content professional working in digital design, Lisa Matthews often encounters products and services that leave her frustrated and disempowered. Her digital design journey began with Windows 95, and the increasing complexity of the Internet of Things (IoT) and large software ecosystems have, over the years, significantly influenced her approach to design and her experience as an end-user of tech.

At Nexer Digital, Lisa works with a team of design and development professionals to better understand and overcome user experience (UX) challenges. As a citizen, she struggles with the very products and services she helps make. In this talk, Lisa will share personal insights into her own accessibility challenges as a neurodivergent technology user. There will also be some shared examples of great digital functionality that empower not just neurodiverse users but everyone.
