Visualising the City: Digital Twins and Beyond

Join the Manchester Digital Strategy Research Network and Digital Futures for a free event on January 17th to explore the latest ways to visualise cities. This event will bring together academic and public sector professionals to discuss how we can use digital technologies to improve city planning, design, resident engagement, and management.

From digital twins to AR/VR and other creative methods, we'll be exploring the full range of possibilities for visualising the city. We'll also be hearing from Connected Places Catapult on how Birmingham built its own digital twin with the help of academic partners.

This event is a great opportunity to learn about the latest trends in city visualisation, network, and explore new ideas for how we can use this technology to make Manchester a better place to live.

12:30 - 12:45: Arrival

12:45 – 13:00: Welcome and introduction from the Manchester Digital Strategy team

13:00 – 13:20: Case study: Birmingham's digital twin, led by Connected Places Catapult

13:20 - 14:20: World Cafe: Identifying opportunities for using visualisation to improve the city

World Cafe Objectives:

  • To identify the key challenges and opportunities for using visualisation to improve city planning, design, resident engagement, and management in Manchester across the key Digital Strategy themes of people, place, and sustainability.
  • To develop concrete use cases for visualisation projects that could be implemented in Manchester across the key Digital Strategy themes of people, place, and sustainability.
  • To strengthen relationships and collaboration between academic and public sector professionals working on city visualisation.

World Cafe Outputs:

  • A list of key challenges and opportunities for using visualisation to improve city planning, design, resident engagement, and management in Manchester across the key Digital Strategy themes of people, place, and sustainability.
  • A set of concrete use cases for visualisation projects that could be implemented in Manchester across the key Digital Strategy themes of people, place, and sustainability.
  • A network of academic and public sector professionals working on city visualisation in Manchester who are committed to collaborating on future projects.
