Job summary

We’re looking for an exceptional Foundation DevOps Engineer to help us make a difference to our planet. 

As our Foundation DevOps Engineer, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work.

Job description

Your world of expertise 

Join our dynamic Corporate Technology team, where we provide and manage a range of essential business applications and technology services that empower every colleague at the Met Office. Our mission is to equip our teams with the right tools and support, enabling them to work efficiently and securely, in line with our security protocols and corporate standards.

As part of the Corporate Applications Team, you'll play a vital role in supporting and developing a wide array of business applications and services used across the entire organisation, helping to drive innovation and operational excellence at the Met Office.

Your key duties 

  • Analyse current processes and identify opportunities to optimise them.
  • Help to evaluate and establish requirements for the implementation of changes.
  • Proactively monitor services for issues and provide prompt response to incidents.
  • Carry out maintenance tasks on infrastructure and complete requests from the organisation.
  • Design, code, test and document simple programs or scripts under the direction of others.

Person specification

Essential Criteria, skills and experience: 

  1. A proven ability to communicate effectively and professionally with a range of customers. [We’re better together]
  2. An enthusiasm for working in IT and an ability to solve abstract IT problems and provide efficient and effective solutions in a timely manner.  
  3. An understanding of integrating systems and the associated benefits, as well as the challenges of designing, building and testing system integrations.
  4. Experience of managing and supporting off-the-shelf applications and SaaS products. [We are experts by nature]
  5. An understanding of information security and methods that can be used to mitigate security threats within solutions and services.

Desirable Criteria:

As our Foundation DevOps Engineer, your total reward package will be up to £39,976 annually, which includes: 

  • £26,954 base pay
  • An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 27%
  • Recruitment Retention Allowance (RRA) you will be paid £2,200 per annum as a market supplement to reflect the demand for your skills. Whilst in post, you will be paid this market driven allowance from April 2024 until September 2025 in your monthly pay
  • Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years and option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year of annual leave
