This is a great opportunity to join a supportive, dynamic team. We work closely with Delivery Support and Change Teams to keep equipment up to date and to maintain and improve agencies security. No two days here are the same, you will be involved with a range of challenges. You will be part of a team that proactively monitor, maintain, and optimise the performance of critical IT infrastructure, enabling seamless operations and minimising downtime for our customers.

Job description

Overview of role

The successful candidate for this role will work within a Data Centre Operations team, the primary purpose of this function is to contribute to the continuous running of the DVLA Data Centres that underpin DVLA services together with three Communications rooms, that contain production infrastructure.

You will ensure that services are delivered as required. Working with and supporting colleagues across ITS such as Networks, NOCSOC, Storage and Engineering Services and the wider agency to maintain and support infrastructure services.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Hardware Installation Planning & Asset Inventory (Audits / Design)
  • Hardware Installation
  • Infrastructure cabling (Datacentre and office space)
  • Cable testing /fault finding (fibre/copper)
  • Data Centre Access Management
  • Routine Visual Checks
  • Operations Policies and Procedures
  • Proactive advice and guidance as to the optimal configuration of the environments (cooling/airflow)
  • Management of Data Centre (Infrastructure) Stores including disposals
  • Data centre capacity planning
  • Management and resolution of hardware faults

Candidates are required to work a shift pattern covering mornings and evenings. The function covers 06:00 – 14:00 hours and 14:00 – 22:00, Monday to Friday and an indicative shift allowance of 12.5% is applicable.

Additional information 

Applications will be accepted from full time/part time/job sharers. Full time roles at DVLA consist of 37 hours per week. Part time and/or flexible working may also be available subject to the needs of the business. This role will be based in Swansea, and we will be operating a hybrid working model that allows you to work between home and on-site giving you greater flexibility about where and when you work, subject to business needs and this also allows for ongoing support, development, and collaboration with colleagues.

Therefore, the expectation is that you will spend a minimum of 60% of your working time based at your principal workplace (DVLA). We would encourage you to discuss the working arrangements for this role with us during the recruitment process.

Person specification

For this role were looking for a team player with excellent communication and influencing skills. You will be confident taking ownership and making informed decisions.

You will have fantastic communication skills and be confident in communicating technical information to a variety of audiences.

You must be adaptable, and able to use your initiative to undertake work and make effective decisions with ability to problem-solve to find timely solutions. You will be able to work well under pressure, and used to restructuring priorities when the need arises.

For your CV and personal statement, please provide detailed evidence of your experience of the following essential criteria:   

  • Managing and supporting Datacentre Hardware
  • Working as part of a team of engineers to complete complex tasks and requests related to datacentre connectivity. Use of fusion splicer, OTDR , Light source and power metre, fluke testing for copper.
  • Knowledge of Datacentre infrastructure (Space , Power , Cooling , IT connectivity)

This interview will be conducted on site at DVLA, Swansea. Further details of which will be provided to you should you be selected for interview.
