Infrastructure Engineers are responsible for the operations of secure and highly available computing platforms, servers, and networks. They install, maintain, upgrade, and continuously improve DWP’s operating environment. They also maintain the ongoing reliability, performance and support of the infrastructure.
This includes:
- Monitoring the operating environments.
- Responding to incidents and problems.
- Planning for growth – by providing infrastructure solutions based on application needs and anticipated growth.
- Overall operation and maintenance of DWP digital infrastructure.
- Deployment of new technologies as well as design, install, configure, maintain and perform testing of PC/server operating systems, networks, and related utilities and hardware.
- Troubleshooting problems as reported by users.
Please note that the team provides support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and as a result you may be expected to work as part of an on-call rota.

Job description
As an Infrastructure Engineer, you will build, administer, support, and maintain solutions as directed and according to departmental policy.
You will deal with the day-to-day management and development of infrastructure products and contribute towards their design.
You will be responsible for the operational stability of the infrastructure solutions and be in a position to affect change in the on-going robustness and resilience of those products.
You will collaborate with seniors and own Infrastructure Development Lifecycle Process as part of a delivery team focused on one or more products.
Your responsibilities will include but are not restricted to, the following:
- 3rd line support for incidents, problems and changes.
- Apply different techniques to methods in analysing and resolving problems, working up new practices and procedures or modify existing processes to improve performance.
- Providing technical support and assistance.

- Design and implement infrastructure services/solutions to meet strategic plans and roadmaps.
- Deal with and take decisions on day-to-day operational management of services/solutions relating to own work area and to those they manage.
- Provide specialist technical support and assistance to projects ensuring definition and delivery of requisite non-functional requirements to architectural and roadmap developments.
- Management of an operational area, a function, or a project team, act independently on day-to-day issues.
- Provide reports of Service performance to the Senior Infrastructure Engineer and other senior leadership members from Digital, reporting against agreed KPIs and via the relevant reporting channels and forums.
- Management of the risk register for individual technical area, ensuring appropriate reporting and mitigation plans and actions are implemented.
Person specification
When giving details in your application you should highlight your experience in line with essential criteria below:
- Experience of supporting Windows Operating Systems up to Windows Server 2022 including roles and features such as RDS and Failover Clustering and Active Directory DNS and Group Policy Management in an enterprise environment.
- Experience of supporting Azure Cloud, HPE Blade System Architecture and Hyper Converged Infrastructure, specifically Nutanix Enterprise Cloud including exposure to technologies such as AOS / AHV, Prism and VMware.
- Experience of developing and implementing proactive monitoring and alerting for critical infrastructure and services and of creating and developing scripted solutions such as: PowerShell, Ansible, REST and Batch.
- Experience of implementing, managing, and supporting services that are aligned to the business strategy and operational requirements and successfully presenting the service portfolio/catalogue to non-technical audiences.
- Strong background in Service Management & Operations (particularly Request Fulfilment, Incident/Problem/Change Management).
