About the job

Job summary

Are you a skilled software developer looking to make a global impact through technology? Join us at Kew to lead the development of a new version of Index Fungorum, one of the oldest and most respected resources in fungal nomenclature. Established in 1940 and brought online in 2000, Index Fungorum is a critical tool for the mycological community. Your work will help modernize this resource, ensuring it continues to serve as an authoritative source of fungal nomenclature data.

In this role, you will focus on the technical development of the Index Fungorum platform, working closely with taxonomists at Kew and curators of other international fungal nomenclature databases. Your primary responsibilities will include stabilizing existing mycological tools, designing and implementing a new hosted architecture, and creating a user-friendly, WCAG-compliant UI/UX. Additionally, you will be expected to incorporate AI and machine learning technologies to enhance data curation, synchronization, and integration, ensuring the platform is prepared for the anticipated growth in fungal taxonomy.

Job description

We are looking for a motivated and knowledgeable individual with a degree in IT or Computer Science, or equivalent experience, and a proven track record in developing complex software according to stakeholder needs. You will be an enthusiastic team player, capable of leading the technical aspects of this project, while collaborating closely with domain experts who manage the database content.

Person specification

As part of the multidisciplinary Digital Revolution department, you will work alongside experts in computer science, evolution, genomics, bioinformatics, spatial analysis, data architecture, and web development. You will also employ agile methodologies to ensure the development process is efficient, collaborative, and adaptive to changing needs.

Whilst primarily based at Kew, there is the option of regular home working, subject to operational requirements.

Benefits

Our fantastic benefits package includes opportunities for continuous learning, a generous annual leave entitlement, flexible working to help you maintain a healthy work-life balance, an Employee Assistance Programme and other wellbeing support such as cycle to work scheme and discounted gym membership. We also offer a competitive pension, an employee discount scheme and free entry into a wide range of national museums and galleries, as well as access to our own beautiful gardens at Kew and Wakehurst.
