Air's Capability and Programmes mission is to generate the components of air-power and develop our capabilities to achieve precise campaign effects across the spectrum of operations whenever and wherever they are required.

The Programme Management Office, part of  Air Capability and Programmes located at Air Command, is responsible for supporting the delivery of the Air Mobility and Air Enablers sub-Portfolio.  Air Command is an attractive place to work, located in the village of Walters Ash, supported by good public transport links with regular bus services to and from Aylesbury and High Wycombe. There is free car parking on site, access to a subsidised gym, a convenience store and a dedicated Costa Café.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Programme Management Office (PMO), where as a Project Support Officer you will be supporting the Programme Manager in the delivery of Air Capability Programmes.  This job includes the opportunity to work from home and travel to UK locations on work-related duties. 

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

Air Mobility and Air Enablers manages a variety of programmes which includes; capability, delivery, maintenance and upgrade across the RAF Air Mobility Fleet, the RAF pilot training capability and innovating solutions to support Aircrew performance.  

The role of the Project Support Officer covers a diverse range of activities to support the delivery of the project’s objectives. The Project Support Officer enables the smooth running of the project by supporting the project manager through the operation of project management processes, and the co-ordination of business management actions and activities on their behalf.

The role aligns with the Government Project Delivery Capability Framework and responsibilities include:

  • Developing and/or managing the PMO outputs  which are: Risks, Assumptions, Dependencies, Benefits, Stakeholder Engagement, Communications, Schedules, Lessons-from-Experience and Information. 
  • Managing the drumbeat of governance meetings for the programme, ensuring that the meetings deliver output of appropriate quality to allow the Senior Responsible Owner (who is accountable for the programme) to make key decisions. 
  • Supporting effective governance and decision making. Providing reporting and engaging in mechanisms that hold your Programme Manager to account for delivery. 
  • Engaging with assurance reviews and supporting action on recommendations. Organise assurance processes such as gateway reviews, as required. 
  • Ensuring effective Change Management processes are in place to agree and documenting changes to deliverables as agreed with stakeholders.    

This role presents an excellent opportunity to gain valuable Portfolio, Programme and Project Management (P3M) experience across a diverse portfolio, enhanced by training opportunities that offer the ability to gain professional P3M qualifications.

  • Ideally have or be willing to work towards qualifications in programme management.  Training will be given where required.  
  • Have sound written and oral communications skills (writing records of meeting and liaising with Stakeholders).  
  • Be a good team member and be able to work supervised and independently. 
  • Deliver outputs within acceptable time limits and to an established battle-rhythm.  On occasion turn work around quickly to meet wider demands. 
  • Take pride in your work and deliver to high standards. 
  • Show commitment to personal development. 
  • Be able to work from the office at RAF High Wycombe as well as from home and other UK locations.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance. The post does not offer relocation expenses.

External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.
