This role is in the DfE Funding Service Delivery team in Funding and Financial Oversight Directorate within the DfE Digital, Data and Technology (DDT) function. The Service Delivery division supports one of the biggest funding operations anywhere across government. We ensure over £75bn of education and training funds are allocated, contracted and paid accurately and on time through our digital Funding Service made up of internal and external facing products. The service, and the funding operations it supports, works at pace to deliver a high-quality customer experience. About the Team: As a Senior Interaction Designer, you will be joining a friendly, motivated team looking to transform the user experience of receiving and managing education funding, as well as how our internal operators use the service. We view the education funding service as not just the digital element, but also the operational processes, the data in it and the whole journey both on and offline. All the divisions involved in the service take a holistic approach and all are focused on the needs of our users. |
Job description
As a Senior Interaction Designer, you will: |
- Lead on the design and prototyping of user interfaces that align with user needs and business requirements.
- Collaborate with UCD professionals, including researchers, service designers, and content designers, to turn insights into functional and engaging designs.
- Use data and evidence to refine and improve designs, making informed decisions based on testing and user feedback.
- Advocate for user needs throughout the design process, ensuring solutions are accessible, inclusive, and solve complete user problems.
- Communicate design solutions effectively to stakeholders, contributing to the overall vision for the service.
- Coach and mentor junior designers, facilitate design crits, and ensure services are meeting design standards as a service assessor.
Person specification
Essential Criteria:
- Extensive experience in designing and testing complex user interfaces, using advanced prototyping techniques to validate and refine designs.
- Skilled in using data, research, and testing feedback to drive informed, user-centred design decisions.
- Strong communicator with the ability to manage and influence senior stakeholders, encourage collaboration, and facilitate alignment across teams.
- Expert knowledge in accessible and inclusive design principles, ensuring products are usable for all users.
- Experienced in agile working practices, adapting to iterative feedback and prioritising tasks based on user and business needs.
- Be familiar with using, and contributing to, design systems and have experience designing accessible, user-centred digital products in complex or regulated environments.
Desirable Criteria:
- Be able to prototype in code using HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
- Strong analytical skills to identify and address issues within service designs, improving reliability and usability.
- Ability to evaluate and measure design impact against organisational KPIs and objectives.
Desirable criteria will only be assessed at interview, in the event of a tie break situation, to make an informed decision.
