Job summary

The Integrated Corporate Services (ICS) is a new shared corporate service, launched in July 2023. It provides corporate services (HR, Finance, Digital, Commercial, Security and Estates) across the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero (DESNZ) and the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology (DSIT).

The team

As a software developer at ICS Digital, you will be part of a dynamic and innovative team that is spearheading the government's development of shared services in the digital space. You will have the opportunity to work with cutting-edge cloud technologies, such as the Microsoft Co-Pilot suite, and deliver solutions that meet the needs of a diverse range of customers across different departments. You will also have the chance to learn from experienced colleagues, collaborate with other professionals, and contribute to the continuous improvement of our products and processes.

You will build and maintain SharePoint websites and applications that serve multiple customers and departments. You will migrate content from old websites, implement governance standards, and use AI and machine learning to enhance user experience.

Person specification

Key Responsibilities

- Work closely with product owner and content managers to manage competing priorities and translate business and technical requirements into solutions which achieve business objectives.

- Create new configuration for packaged software, primarily Microsoft products with a focus on SharePoint (using PowerShell, SQL etc.). Write and modify code that meets customer needs and aims for simplicity and testability.

- Review new releases in the Microsoft roadmap and identify new features that can be enabled for the business. This will include assessing how AI tooling such as Co-Pilot can enhance the user experience retrieving and reusing SharePoint content.

- Support the migration of content between legacy intranet websites and new SharePoint websites.

- Prepare technical documentation, including software design evaluation plans, test results, and technical manuals, submit documentation for approval by digital governance boards.

- Maintaining and supporting existing SharePoint sites by responding to issues related to site administration, security, performance, and other technical issues.

- Conduct analysis to determine integration needs, and design, test and implement integrations.

- Potential to coach and mentor junior software engineers.

Essential criteria

- Be an expert in Microsoft technologies such as SharePoint, Power Platform and/or Azure Active Directory.

- Possess PowerShell and SQL skills, including development of ground-up scripting across M365 services.

- Experience in SharePoint website migration and migration planning.

Desirable criteria

- Demonstrate good presentation skills to address relevant stakeholders and technical audiences.

- Demonstrate good understanding of product management, agile principles and development methodologies.

Office attendance

The Department operates a discretionary hybrid working policy, which provides for a combination of working hours from your place of work and from your home in the UK. The current expectation for staff is to attend the office or non-home-based location for 40-60% of the time over the accounting period.
