This role is offered as part of our TechTrack apprenticeship programme, and is for an apprentice DevOps Engineer.

Job description

Commonly referred to as ‘DevOps engineers’, development operations engineers support the development and operation of software through tools, environments and practices. DevOps Engineers are responsible for underpinning good development processes including managing tools and testing environments, source code management, maintaining development standards and writing software that automates systems.

Our provider for the DevOps TechTrack Apprenticeship will be Makers.

As a TechTrack apprentice DevOps engineer you will:

  • Spend a significant proportion of your time shadowing others
  • Be involved in implementation but not planning
  • Build on your knowledge

Skills you will gain during the apprenticeship

  • Availability and capacity management - You can show an awareness of availability and capacity management processes. (Skill level: awareness)
  • Information security - You can demonstrate an understanding of information security and the types of security controls that can be used to mitigate security threats within solutions and services. (Skill level: working)
  • Modern standards approach - You can explain the most important principles of a modern standards approach and how they apply to the work you are undertaking. You can apply these principles under guidance. (Skill level: working)
  • Programming and build (software engineering) - You can design, code, test, correct and document simple programs or scripts under the direction of others. (Skill level: working)
  • Prototyping - You can understand when to use a specific prototyping technique or method. You can show the value of prototyping to your team. (Skill level: working)
  • Service support - You can help fix faults following agreed procedures. You can carry out agreed maintenance tasks on infrastructure. (Skill level: working)
  • Systems design - You can assist as part of a team in the design of components of larger systems. (Skill level: awareness)
  • Systems integration - You can talk about the process of integrating systems and the challenges of designing, building and testing interfaces between systems. (Skill level: awareness)
  • User focus - You can show an awareness or understanding of user experience analysis and its principles. You can explain the purpose of user stories and the focus on user needs. (Skill level: awareness)

Person specification

We want people who can learn and grow into a technical career and we are looking for people who demonstrate an enthusiastic interest in technology.

We’re looking for future technologists with the below experience who will progress into DevOps Engineers, so we are looking for people who have some (but not all) of:

  • some knowledge of operating systems, server administration, or Cloud infrastructure providers
    such as AWS, GCP or Azure
  • some ability to write code in one or more programming languages (we use a range of languages,
    including Ruby, Python, JavaScript / Node.js, Java and Go)
  • an understanding of the value of automation and infrastructure as code
  • some experience with automation tools such as Terraform, Ansible or Puppet
  • some experience of building and supporting continuous integration and deployment systems
  • an interest in building scalable, resilient systems
  • some understanding of computer networks and how they work

We want to help you learn, so it is essential you have:

  • a curiosity for problem solving and an eagerness to learn
  • excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • the ability to research and learn new tools and techniques
  • a willingness to learn from those around you and adopt our practices
  • a keen interest in digital services and agile working
  • an understanding of the web and how it fits together

And it would be good, but not essential, if you already have:

  • experience of using testing to validate solutions
  • knowledge of common security principles
  • an ability to communicate technical concepts to peers through written documentation
  • awareness of your own development needs
  • awareness of the wider technology community
  • confidence to demo your work, give feedback and ask for help
  • a desire to collaborate and contribute to the community

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be over 16 years old
  • Have permission to live and work in the UK
  • Have an eligibility residency status:
    • UK citizens- have an ordinarily resident in the UK for the last three years
    • EU/EAA citizens- obtained either pre-settled or settled status and have lived continuously in the EEA or the UK in the last three years
    • Non EU/EEA citizens- have permission from the UK government to live in the UK (not for educational purposes) and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least the last three years. Those with refugee status or leave to enter/remain may be exempt from the three year rule

Applicants must not:

  • Be in receipt of a student loan
  • Be on another Department For Education funded training programme, including another
    apprenticeship
  • Hold a prior qualification at the same or higher level in a subject similar to the
    apprenticeship

CDDO offers hybrid working for all employees. This means that everyone does some working from home and also spends some time in their local office. You’ll agree to your hybrid working arrangement with your line manager in line with your preferences and business needs.

Any move to the Central Digital and Data Office from another employer will mean you can no longer access childcare vouchers. This includes moves between government departments. Selection process details
