This role is offered as part of our TechTrack apprenticeship programme, and is for an apprentice Software Developer.

Our provider for the Software Developer TechTrack Apprenticeship will be Makers.

Job description

As a TechTrack apprentice Software Developer you will design, run and improve software that meets user needs. In this role, you will:

  • Be responsible for writing clean, secure code following a test-driven approach
  • Create code that is open by default and easy for others to reuse
  • Spend a substantial portion of time shadowing others
  • Work with other developers to write code and tests
  • Build your knowledge
  • Follow a test-driven approach
  • Write code that is automatically tested

Person specification

We are looking for people who can demonstrate their love of technology, and their eagerness to learn and grow their careers in Government Digital and Data.

We would like to meet people who:

  • have a curiosity for problem solving
  • enjoy teamwork and collaborating with others
  • have the ability to research and learn new tools and techniques
  • have a willingness to learn from those around them, and adopt our practices
  • have an interest in digital services and agile working

Not essential but would be beneficial if the applicant has an interest in:

  • some experience of frontend or backend development, with basic knowledge of at least one programming language (we use a range of languages, including Ruby, Python, JavaScript / Node.js and Java, but experience with other languages is fine too)
  • experience of writing tests to validate your code
  • an awareness of software design principles
  • a familiarity with version control (for example git and github)
  • some experience with databases
  • some knowledge of the command line

And it would be good, but not essential, if you already have:

  • a basic understanding of the web and how it fits together
  • knowledge of common security principles
  • an ability to communicate technical concepts to peers through written documentation
  • awareness of your own development needs
  • confidence to demo your work, give feedback and ask for help

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must:

  • Be over 16 years old
  • Have permission to live and work in the UK
  • Have an eligibility residency status:
    • UK citizens- have an ordinarily resident in the UK for the last three years
    • EU/EAA citizens- obtained either pre-settled or settled status and have lived continuously in the EEA or the UK in the last three years
    • Non EU/EEA citizens- have permission from the UK government to live in the UK (not for educational purposes) and have been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least the last three years. Those with refugee status or leave to enter/remain may be exempt from the three year rule

Applicants must not:

  • Be in receipt of a student loan
  • Be on another Department For Education funded training programme, including another
    apprenticeship
  • Hold a prior qualification at the same or higher level in a subject similar to the
    apprenticeship

CDDO offers hybrid working for all employees. This means that everyone does some working from home and also spends some time in their local office. You’ll agree to your hybrid working arrangement with your line manager in line with your preferences and business needs.

Selection process details

The standard selection process consists of:

  • An application screening process - Simply, hit apply. We ask you to fill in an application form which includes uploading an anonymous CV.
  • Next step would be to complete an assessed apprenticeship based activity in which if the applicant is successful will progress onto the next stage.
  • The next stage will include self assessments- these assessments will be used to scan the applicants suitability, eligibility and readiness for the role.
  • You will be invited to attend a final stage interview where applicants will be provided with the relevant time and information to prepare for beforehand.
  • If successful at the interview stage the candidate will be shortlisted and eligible for any upcoming
    opportunities.


If we receive a high number of applications, we will carry out an initial sift using assessment test results.
