Scaling up is hard to do!

It's an energising feeling. Your initial concept, your vision is getting some real traction and you’re onboarding customers as quickly as you can find them. Scaling the business – or crossing the chasm as Geoffrey Moore famously referred to it – is a hugely exciting if also challenging endeavour. The ultimate balancing act, feat of juggling or whatever similar metaphor you may choose to use.

Chances are you’re growing the team, filling gaps with specialists which you, until now, had to largely cover yourself. But that in itself can be hugely draining. As much as you may try you simply can’t be across everything. You can’t be everywhere and you fear losing the essence of everything that’s got you this far.

This is where you discover that leadership can feel quite solitary. Leading a scaling business can actually be an incredibly lonely place at times. Bizarre when you’re surrounded by people but true when they all come with expectations! I know, I’ve experienced it too.

Leadership is hard, of course it is, but what I learned is that it’s so much harder when you’re doing it in isolation. It needn’t be like that though! This is precisely the point you should be investing in YOU – in precisely the same way that you’re investing in everything and everyone else!

Let’s get one thing clear, self-investment IS NOT indulgent. It’s arguably essential but it’s also the classic founder’s dilemma. Investing a Pound, Euro or Dollar in you isn’t depriving someone or something else, it’s contributing to the collective mission. It’s your business and your vision that you’re investing in and everyone benefits.

And this is the point at which – if you’ll forgive me – I suggest that I may have an answer for you.  Hire a good coach! You’ll quickly realise that you’re no longer alone, having someone who will…

  • Help you to retain/regain clarity of your vision
  • Keep you honest and focussed on the outcomes that matter
  • Offer clear and actionable support in times of doubt
  • Work with you as you build, iterate and validate your path to success
  • Ensure there’s meaningful accountability built into what you have set out to do
  • Offer feedback with impact and share in the successes when they arrive

Still not convinced? Join me then at 10:00 BST on May 28th for a short, on-line discussion where I’ll share how adopting coaching as part of your own growth and development can be the key that unlocks your potential far more quickly than you ever will alone, in isolation.

During the session I’ll briefly share an insight into the framework I use and my outcomes focussed approach to coaching and what working with me might look like for you in reality.

With over three decades tech sales and leadership experience across organisations of literally all sizes the chances are I’ve been where you are at some point.
