At Manchester Digital, we like to interview our members to find out a bit more about what they do and their work in the Greater Manchester digital and technology sphere. This week we're speaking with Mark Ward, Director at DC Advisory.

What are the main funding and growth challenges faced by tech companies, and how does DC Advisory support them?

The Manchester Digital sector has exploded over recent years, boasting over 400 active high-growth tech companies. Despite this, investment continues to lag behind London, Oxford and Cambridge and the dominance of the "golden triangle" can pose a challenge for companies outside this area to attract investment.

At DC Advisory we help by providing strategic financial expertise and access to capital markets. We connect companies with potential investors, both domestically and internationally, expanding access to capital beyond the constraints of regional boundaries.

What advice do you have for founders of mature tech firms looking for significant investment? How should they choose the right financing partners?

Look beyond capital, seek strategic partners who bring expertise and networks to fuel your growth sustainably. Conduct thorough due diligence on potential investors, considering their track record, industry knowledge, and cultural fit. Find investors who understand your business model and long-term goals, fostering a collaborative relationship. Prioritise transparency and communication to ensure mutual trust and alignment. Of course, we're here to guide you through this process and can assist in finding the right investor for you.

The right financing partner can provide more than just funds—they can be invaluable allies in navigating challenges and grasping opportunities.

How has the investment landscape changed for high-growth tech companies in Manchester and the North in the past couple of years, and how does DC Advisory adapt to these changes?

The investment landscape for high-growth tech companies in Manchester and the North has transformed significantly. There's been a noticeable uptick in interest from venture capital and private equity firms, driven by a growing recognition of the region's tech potential. Government initiatives and support programs have also played a crucial role in creating an environment conducive to startups and scale-ups, attracting more investors.

Remote work has emerged as another key factor, with companies expanding their talent search beyond traditional tech hubs, benefiting areas like Manchester. Additionally, the successful exits and IPOs of local tech firms have boosted investor confidence.

At DC Advisory, the rapid expansion of Manchester’s tech industry hasn’t gone unnoticed. We have a specialist team dedicated to meeting the distinctive requirements of tech companies, and our network continues to grow as we proactively cultivate and strengthen our partnerships within the sector. We are committed to serving the growing demand for tech investment in Manchester and the North more broadly.

What three key pieces of advice would you give to the founder of a scaling tech firm in Manchester seeking substantial funding? How can they navigate the unique challenges of the region and industry?

Build a strong network. Establish connections with local and regional investors, venture capital funds, and private equity firms who have a track record of investing in tech firms. Leverage networking events, industry conferences, and startup accelerators in Manchester to expand your contacts and potential funding sources. Seek out advisors who have experience scaling tech firms in the region and can provide valuable guidance on how to navigate the landscape.

Demonstrate your company’s market potential. Develop a compelling business case that highlights the scalability and market potential of your tech solution. Gather market research to illustrate demand for your product or service, both locally and globally.

Work out what is most important to you for the next phase of your journey. There are now many flavours of capital, so being clear upfront on what you are looking to achieve will help narrow down to the right solution. Whilst the breadth of options may feel daunting, utilising advisors and / or a wider investment network will quickly help you to assess which one is best.

Thank you Mark!
