Bolton College and Modern-English Launch Award-Winning App

The ‘Maths Everywhere’ app, which was created after being chosen by a public vote and is considered a ‘game-changing’ development in digital learning solutions, is now available to download on PCs, tablets and other mobile devices via iTunes. The app will support and assist people of all ages to develop and enhance their maths skills by explaining everyday concepts – such as fuel costs to drive certain distances – through to a series of tools and learning activities.

The free app was one of four finalists in a competition run in partnership with the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) and Maths4Us. When crowned the winner, Bolton College was awarded £60,000 to produce the problem-solving app with the help of Modern-English – who have developed digital and Facebook campaigns for clients including Pink Floyd, Oxford Univeristy Saïd Business School and worldwide pharmaceutical brand Astrazeneca.

Pat Harrison, director of 14-19 learning at Bolton College, said: “As one of the core subjects here at the college, there is a strong emphasis on maths and I’m in no doubt that this app is going to inject some fun into what is a stereotypically dry subject.

“By helping to improve maths skills through day-to-day problem solving, we hope it will encourage the study of maths at a higher level, providing adults with greater confidence in their numerical skills at home and at work, while giving young people a vital grounding as they embark on their career.

“Maths is a fundamental skill that employers expect their staff to have a good grasp of, regardless of their profession. That’s why we embed the subject, as well as English, into all our programmes. This ensures that all learners understand their relevance and can see firsthand how the skills they’re acquiring will help them in their future careers.”

Bruce Thomas, Director of Modern English, said: "We’ve thoroughly enjoyed working with Bolton College on this project and we’re very proud to have created an innovative and exciting piece of educational software.”
Susan Easton, Digital Programme Manager at NIACE, said: "The objective of this competition was ultimately to create an app that would help people who need a boost with their numeracy skills. Modern English and Bolton College have helped us achieve this objective beautifully, in a fun yet informative way."
