By Ellie Powell, Community Executive, and Carbon Literacy Lead at Manchester Digital.
Climate change is overwhelming, isn’t it? The sheer scale of the issue can make it feel like our individual actions are just drops in the ocean. Manchester is the tech hub of the UK and here at Manchester Digital, we were proud to be part of the design team for the digital and tech toolkit which consists of a set of resources and activities designed to educate individuals and organisations to understand and take action on climate change.
This course goes deep into the science of carbon emissions and how our actions impact the planet. What hit me the most was realising how much power we all have to create change, even in small ways. It’s one thing to hear about the climate crisis but another to truly understand how our daily actions can contribute to a solution.
For our members and other tech businesses from across the region, this course offers more than just facts and figures - it’s a way to align your work with the broader sustainability goals of the tech community. The one-day session includes some prep work, so you’re up-to-date on climate topics and ready to dive into practical ways to make a difference. For businesses that join, it’s an eye-opener on reducing carbon footprints and taking steps that help the planet and reinforce Manchester as a tech community with a conscience.
The reason this course is so important to me is that it empowers us with practical knowledge. It doesn’t just stop at why things are the way they are, but gives us the tools to make informed choices and advocate for more sustainable practices in our everyday lives. It’s about becoming part of the solution, not just a passive observer of the problem. This meant the message of the day was hopeful rather than hopeless. The time to act is now, and I’m thrilled to see how Manchester Digital members can lead the charge in building a more sustainable future for tech. If we can take these steps together - why wouldn’t we? Let’s keep making Manchester’s tech community a driving force for positive change.
Be Part of the Solution: Manchester Digital’s Carbon Literacy Training Day
Want to start your sustainability journey? Join us for Manchester Digital’s Carbon Literacy Training Day on 20th February, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at our offices. In partnership with Auto Trader and The Carbon Literacy Project, this hands-on training day is specifically crafted for the digital and tech sectors, making it a perfect starting point for businesses and individuals ready to take action.
We’re also launching the Digital and Tech Sector Toolkit, an adaptable, off-the-shelf training resource for the whole industry. The training will dive into why climate change matters to our sector, how to calculate and shrink your carbon footprint, and practical tips for building low-carbon cultures in our workplaces. Experiencing Carbon Literacy training firsthand is one of the best ways to understand its impact.
The day will be full of discussions, activities, and real-world steps to take. At the end of the session, you’ll even have the chance to apply for Carbon Literacy certification, showing your commitment to a more sustainable future.
We’ll have lunch, refreshments and plenty of time to network with other professionals across the digital and tech space. Feel free to bring a colleague interested in helping roll out this training within your organisation.
