TALENT DAY TOP TIPS
Preparation
Do your homework. Research which businesses will be there and what they do - you’ll be sent a list of attending companies a week before the event.
Update and tailor your CV and make sure you have plenty of copies with you, as well as ready to share online.
Do you have a LinkedIn profile or Twitter account? Make sure that is up to date and follow/connect with the companies that interest you.
Prepare questions. Go armed with some key and thoughtful questions. Demonstrate your interest in the companies you want to speak to and think about how their company would benefit from employing you.
Practice your ‘career’ elevator pitch. Practice pitching yourself in 30-60 seconds to a potential employer to make the right impact - explain who you are, what your skills are, and what your career goal is.
On the Day
Manage your time. Get there early enough to make sure you can fit everything in, the seminars and CV clinics will give you incredible industry perspective so you need time to attend those as well as visit employer stands.
Use your elevator pitch. Be curious, engaging and show some passion. Businesses want to see enthusiasm.
Contact details. Make sure you ask and remember recruiters’ names and get their contact details.
Be open to the advice that you will receive from prospective employers or recruiters, it may open up new areas or roles you have never considered before.
Get networking. Talent Day is a highly efficient way to network and make valuable new contacts. Not only do you have direct access to employers, you’re also surrounded by job seekers with similar interests who could turn into future colleagues or have useful leads for you. Use the opportunity to grow your connections and start passing your name around in professional circles.
After the Event
Follow up. Make sure you follow up on the conversations you had with employers, even if it is nothing more than thanking them for their time. If you said you would email your CV or send additional information, then make sure you do. Don't leave it more than 2-3 days at the most to do this, otherwise, you have lost impact.
Keep networking. You’ve done all that prep. build on it, get to industry events and develop your own industry network.
Keep up to date with what is happening in the industry and with the employers you are interested in. One great way is to sign up to Manchester Digital’s newsletter https://www.manchesterdigital.com/
