The Spectator magazine has opposed any suggestion that the regulator be backed by any form of law from the publication of Leveson. Now it has been joined by the New Statesman - from the opposite end of the political spectrum and highly critical of the behaviour in the press that led to Leveson, but which now cites the impact on the freedom to publish on the Internet as a major concern. This stems from the inclusion of 'news related material' on the net in the charter.
New Statesman editor Jason Cowley told the Guardian's Roy Greenslade "We are deeply sceptical of the proposed model and believe that it is unworkable, chiefly because it doesn't appear to understand the way the internet works."
