The plan is to offer speeds of up to 100Mbps (megabits per second) to both homes and businesses. The announcement means Salford will receive £7.1m in funding, some of which will be matched by private investment, and will allow broadband services to reach to 98 per cent of the city.
The investment will help businesses across Salford to expand due to increased connectivity. It is expected to stimulate private sector investment, fill in broadband services where commercial providers do not deliver, stimulate demand from residents and businesses, and help small and medium size enterprise get off the ground.
Salford City Mayor Ian Stewart said: "Salford is the home of MediaCityUK, the most advanced technology centre in western Europe, and with this funding the rest of the city will enjoy ultra-fast broadband to encourage business growth.
