The Swedish streaming company will eventually benefit from being exposed to nearly 700 million unique users a month who visit the range of Yahoo’s properties. Initially the Spotify button will just sit on Yahoo!’s music page, but it will soon be rolled out across its entire portfolio.
Earlier this year Spotify launched its ‘play’ button on a range of sites – which allowed the streaming service to broaden its reach beyond its own website and Facebook’s – which it signed a major partnership deal with last year. As with the ‘play’ button, people will need a Spotify account in order to listen to 16 million songs via Yahoo’s sites.
"Delivering compelling premium experiences across screens is core to our mission at Yahoo," said Ross Levinsohn, Yahoo's new chief executive."
Spotify is the leader in the digital music field and together we can provide the 'soundtrack' for users around the world." Yahoo is also expected to create a dedicated entertainment app later this year with Spotify's service at the centre. The Yahoo deal is another aggressive move by the Swedish company to acquire more users.
