A group of experienced entrepreneurs have joined forces to launch the Manchester Tech Trust (MTT), a not-for-profit organisation that aims to "provide the missing link in Manchester's dynamic technology enterprise landscape".
MTT has ambitions to link up investors drawn to Manchester's economic development and Northern Powerhouse status with the city's start-ups. The organisation describes itself as a gateway to match entrepreneurs with appropriate support, services and investment opportunities.
Among the MTT's tools is a comprehensive and searchable online resource that signposts sources of funding at every stage of business. The body's website, which goes live today (Thursday, 5 November 2015), is also intended to act as an information portal for investors and workspaces. And there is a register of experienced mentors and supporters willing to provide advice and guidance to the next generation of technology entrepreneurs.
Neil McArthur, group innovations director of TalkTalk, the telecoms business he founded and demerged from Carphone Warehouse Group in 2010, is the chairman of Manchester Tech Trust.
He said: "Manchester is a tech enterprise hotspot with lots of assets and activity. There is a tangible buzz in the city as investors in technology and digital seek to know more about the Northern Powerhouse and the opportunities around our advances in materials science, notably Manchester University's new graphene facilities.
"Investors feel that this link up role is the missing element in the city. We aim to be the super connector, the 'go-to' organisation to bring people, support and finance together to make things happen in the quickest and most effective way."
Peter Lusty, chief executive of Manchester Tech Trust, said: "We are not here to duplicate the work of the public sector bodies and trade associations. Alongside those agencies, we will vigorously promote the city, for example, to encourage incubators and accelerators to establish a Manchester presence."
Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester City Council, said: "Manchester City Council welcomes the formation of the Manchester Tech Trust, and the contribution it will make to the city region's dynamic and growing technology sector.
"We are seeing a new generation of entrepreneurs being attracted to Manchester's exciting business environment, which will greatly benefit by the trust's ability to link private investors with start-up and scale up companies.
"This new initiative demonstrates that in Manchester the private sector works closely in partnership with the public sector, and that our business leaders have a strong commitment to give something back, which is part of a long and proud tradition in our city."
