In the Spotlight with Northcoders: From Bootcamp Graduate to Cohort Lead

At Manchester Digital, we like to interview our members to find out a bit more about what they do and their work in the Greater Manchester digital and technology sphere. This week we're speaking with Rose Mullan, Cohort Lead at Northcoders.

Introduce yourself:

My name is Rose and I am a Cohort Lead on our Software Development bootcamp. My role sees me deliver lectures and I organise the team that takes our students from beginners to workplace-ready junior software developers. I became a developer in 2019 after finishing the bootcamp myself and I have never looked back. I live in Stockport with my partner and our dog Tufty.

What do you enjoy most about working at Northcoders?

Community is at the very heart of everything Northcoders does, and I love being a part of it. It inspires me and has remained the driving ethos of the company since its inception. Not many organisations offer the network of support that’s available to both staff and students - especially one that is all about collaboration, not competition. That approach is refreshing and is what I believe stands us apart.

What is Northcoders biggest achievement?

That’s an easy one: creating a safe and diverse place in which people from all walks of life can learn how to code. Tech isn’t typically the most diverse of industries, but we strive to make Northcoders welcoming and supportive for all. Over the years, we have taught thousands of people from all sorts of backgrounds and I believe we have made the tech space more equitable – especially for women and gender minorities. I’m not over-egging it when I say that people come to Northcoders to change their lives.

What would you consider to be Northcoders biggest achievements over the last 12 months.

There have been so many, but successfully launching the data engineering course is up there.  Seeing it have a full curriculum in its own right has been fantastic as was launching the Java Development bootcamp. We never sit still though; keep your eyes peeled for the next course that’s coming soon.

What excites you most about joining the Manchester Digital Community?

It seems like there are a lot of shared values like innovation and inclusivity and a network of people striving to achieve cool things whilst pushing the tech conversation further. I’m really excited to see what part we can play in the community and to showcase what we do and the value we can add.

Thank you Rose!
