Life as a Graduate at Northrop Grumman

What is your role at Northrop Grumman?

I am a graduate software engineer. I have worked at Northrop Grumman for one and a half years and I work in command and control.

The projects I work on at Northrop Grumman allow me to interact with cutting edge software I didn’t think I’d be able to work with at this stage in my career. I’ve been able to apply a lot of what I’ve learnt at university to amazing projects which really have a deep meaning in serving NATO and the defence industry.

What’s the team like at Northrop Grumman?

I’d describe the team at Northrop Grumman as deeply knowledgeable and welcoming. Some of the senior engineers I work with have been working in the defence industry for a number of decades - longer than I have been alive! They have a wealth of knowledge that they are open to sharing with me, which has really helped me to develop as a software engineer over the last year.

You might think that being a defence company, the culture would be quite cold but that is not the case. There are many experienced engineers which I’m on a close working basis with. They share their deep knowledge with me all day long and it’s really helped to upskill me.

Can you tell us a bit more about a recent volunteering opportunity you had at Northrop Grumman?

I volunteered in the STEM area at the Royal International Air Tattoo in July 2023.I love volunteering at events like RIAT to encourage more children to get into a career in STEM. Seeing the air shows was obviously a huge benefit to!

I didn’t think I’d be in this position one year out of university. I think it’s really important for me to talk to young people to show them they can do it too. If you study engineering and get your mind around solving problems, then you too can work on some really interesting projects in the industry.

What advice do you have for someone considering applying to join Northrop Grumman?

The advice I’d give someone looking for a career at Northrop Grumman is to simply apply! There are so many projects and different areas that Northrop Grumman interacts with that could really use even more skilled engineers to come on board.
