Hear from Kyle about his story in tech and working at Northrop Grumman UK as a software engineer.
How did you start your career in tech?
I started my career in tech at Manchester Metropolitan University as I studied Computer Science. I went on to complete my masters in Software Engineering before starting a role in the tech industry.
How does Northrop Grumman’s mission for its customers motivate or inspire you?
The work that I carry out for our customers is very inspiring. I use to have the opinion that all code is the same no matter what you work on however, after working for Northrop Grumman UK I discovered that carrying out work with a strong meaning behind it makes you excited to come to work.
What do you love about your career?
The progression - I have found a lot of progression within this company. I came aboard as a Software Engineer and within the three years, I have worked my way to a Senior Software Engineer and a line manager with a current team of six employees.
Also, I love knowing that every day I go to work I am contributing towards making a change in the world.
What career advice would you give young people about careers in tech/cyber/intelligence?
I would give advice to anybody wanting to go into tech/cyber/intelligence to do it. When you discover how you are making a change within the world it’ll change your outlook on work. Your contribution will give you a real sense of achievement at work.
Do you have any role models that have inspired you?
My role models are my parents. They provided me with everything I needed to become the person I am today.
Does the culture of a company matter and what is NGUK’s culture like?
The culture does matter. The Northrop Grumman UK office in Manchester takes a lot of pride in the cultural fit and it shows. As a result we have a very active workplace where people to comfortable approach each other whether it is for help or a general chat. We also have monthly socials to keep the team engaged.
I am part of the Employee Resource Group NG REACH which stands for Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage. I think this group is important because it gives people exposure to different race, ethnicity and cultural heritage that they might not be aware of.
What hobbies or interests do you have to help you wind down away from work?
In my spare time I compete in powerlifting. This is where you have three attempts on lifting the heaviest weight you can squat, bench press and deadlift. I have taken part in two competitions and my next one is in November.
