Last week the team at Nublue, a Lancaster digital agency and hosting provider, celebrated the company’s tenth birthday with plenty of cakes, balloons and a bit of wine...
Founded by brothers Michael and Tom Ashworth back in 2005 (featured far right), Nublue began life as a two-man operation with two second-hand PCs and an old beige printer. Based in the smallest office at Lancaster University’s InfoLab facility, they set out with two clear aims: to create high-quality IT jobs in the Lancaster area and to provide world class service to hosting and digital agency clients.
Ten years on, the two brothers have grown Nublue into an award-winning web design, development and hosting company in the heart of Lancaster, working with ambitious start ups and international brands alike. In their first decade of business they’ve expanded their company from a team of two to thirty and growing.
“It’s been an amazing first ten years for Nublue,” says Michael Ashworth, the company’s co-founder and Managing Director. “We’ve come a long way from our early beginnings, and we couldn’t have done it without the hard work and dedication of our amazing team through the years. The fantastic clients we’ve worked with and continue to work with, our charity and sponsorship work, our company’s awards... we couldn’t have done this on our own. Above all, this birthday celebration is about our team, and the clients they work with every day.”
Over the years Nublue moved into bigger and bigger offices at the InfoLab as the business began to grow. In 2012 the company gained national ISO 9001 accreditation; a quality guarantee for its clients which sets it apart from many of its competitors. In 2013 the team moved premises to White Cross Business Park in the heart of Lancaster, and in 2014 the team expanded to 30 employees and took on its first apprentice. This year the company has rolled out its new Smart Serve CDN service, designed to give its 12,000 web hosting clients first-class performance on a global scale – and are about to create more jobs in the Lancaster area.
“We’ve also become an accredited Living Wage Employer this summer,” says Tom Ashworth, Nublue’s Technical Director and co-founder. “We’ve always wanted Nublue to be the best it can be for its staff, as well as its clients. We’re one of only a small number of Living Wage Employers in the area right now, but we think that’s set to grow in the coming months and years as more take this step and make sure their staff are paid wages not just for their work, but to enjoy life more outside of it.”
