Traffic Control for the workplace

Traffic Control for the Mind

Have you ever thought of stopping for a few minutes of silence or meditation whilst at work?

Taking silence breaks during the working day is a useful strategy to refresh our minds and maintain focus.

Faced with a constant barrage of information and demands on our time and minds, such practices can be highly effective. The technique involves focusing on the present moment, observing silence and allowing the mind to slow down and become still.

Onepoint Consulting has used a practice that we call ‘traffic control for the mind’ almost from our start in 2005. Just as road traffic control systems slow down and direct the movement of vehicles, this subtle system focuses on managing the constant flow of thoughts, emotions, and mental stimuli.

At our headquarters in London, gentle music comes on on the hour. This is an invitation to staff and visitors to observe a few minutes of silent reflection or meditation. Taking these breaks offers a refreshing sense of the moment and creates a space for self-awareness and stillness.

Here’s an example of how this traffic control system benefited us. During a meeting, a tense atmosphere arose due to conflicting opinions. However, a moment of stillness served as a valuable pause. Following a minute of silence, the atmosphere reset, and attendees noted the remarkable power of silence to clear the tension.

Even if you don’t have an automated system that reminds you each hour, you could set yourself a reminder in your calendar software or even set a gentle alarm on your mobile device.

Why not give the traffic control concept a try today? We’d love to hear how you find it.
