MD Culture Club: Peak

Joining us for the latest edition of MD Culture Club is Decision Intelligence company Peak.

We spoke to three members of their team to find out exactly what it's like to work there.

The talent lead...
Lorenzo Spina, Head of Talent

Can you tell us a little bit about the company, before describing the culture at the organisation?

Peak is the Decision Intelligence company. We are on a mission to change the way the world works, helping organisations use AI to make great commercial decisions. Just as importantly, we are also focused on building an amazing company. We value our people and culture, and strive to make Peak an amazing and diverse place to work. Our recent Best Companies award and 3 star accreditation is a testament to this, and recognises extraordinary levels of employee engagement

With a flat structure and open communication channels, we have created a culture of innovation where everyone is invested in Peak’s success and has ownership over their role. We look after each other, and celebrate our success together.

How does the company go above and beyond to attract and retain tech talent?

Every business is only as good as the talent it attracts, and that’s no different for Peak. Part of our mission is to build an amazing company that everyone loves being a part of – this is our number one priority as we scale our business.

To achieve this we continuously review and revamp our talent attraction, interview and onboarding processes to ensure that we can attract and engage with the best talent and to guarantee that everyone receives a great experience and is set up for success. Our interview process is open, thorough and fair on both sides; you’ll get to meet a range of people and find out all about Peak and our ambitions before you join.

Our benefit suite prioritises physical and mental wellbeing benefits. We have a Clubhouse first model, with hybrid working and flexible working hours, as well as a work from anywhere for one month of the year policy. Peakers also have free access to our fit club, the Headspace app and talking therapy support.

We want our team to love being a part of what we do – not just for the amazing work we produce, but also for how we look after each other. From our wellbeing support to our culture of continuous learning and superb Club Houses (flexible office spaces that promote collaboration), we’re focused on our people and ensuring they have the best support and development to help them flourish.

What does the future look like for the company and its employees?

We have ambitious plans over the coming years. We want to put Decision Intelligence in the hands of every business, and this year opened the Peak platform up for customers to licence directly. We’re investing heavily in R&D, and leading the creation of the Decision intelligence category, as well expanding our operations globally and creating the best working culture possible.

The new starter...
David Edeh, Software Engineer

Can you describe your role at the company?

I’m a software engineer and a part of a team working on the Factory capabilities of the platform.

What was it about the organisation that attracted you to the role?

  • Company values - smart, curious, open, driven and responsible.
  • Being part of a team in the early stages of its scale up phase.
  • Opportunity to strengthen career foundations by continually learning and evolving. Company culture, locations and flexibility.

Peak’s exceptional culture and company-wide values of being smart, curious, open, driven and responsible quickly convinced me of what an outstanding opportunity it offered to strengthen my foundations. As well as being a part of a company in the early scale-up stages, I was excited by the idea of helping to realise the mission of delivering decision intelligence while building and owning the category. Most importantly, it was immediately apparent that the role would push me to learn, evolve and be better every day. The great clubhouse locations and flexible working model were significant factors too!

Can you describe the onboarding process you’ve experienced?

General –

  • Welcome pack and onboarding itinerary.
  • Introductory meetings to all areas of the business over a two-week period.

Engineering specific –

Following an onboarding checklist which, among others, includes

  • Granting access to documentation such as the engineering handbook. Support through setting up development environments
  • Tours of the Peak platform
  • Introductions to code repositories.

The team is consistently striving to improve and streamline the onboarding process for new joiners which is incredibly important as we continue to grow so rapidly.

The long term employee...
Michael Pearce, Senior Engineering Manager

Can you describe your role at the company?

My name is Michael, and I’m a Senior Engineering Manager at Peak. The title is thankfully generic because the role itself is broad - leading the DevOps team includes Infrastructure, Automation, Collaboration etc. but I get involved in Security as a personal interest and I am helping to build up the new teams such as support as we scale and break out into more specific disciplines.

You’ve been at the company for a number of years, can you tell me what has kept you at the company for so long?

The biggest thing has been the autonomy – I've been empowered to keep doing what I believed needed to be done. I’ve been able to get involved in and take responsibility for so many critical and exciting things that five years has felt like much more than that in terms of experience, I know it sounds cliche but it really is different every day.

What would you say to a person considering joining the company?

We’re driven by our core values so if they resonate with you and you’re curious and open to new ideas and ways of working, driven to change how businesses make decisions then jump on board!
